Ottawa Adds to Toxic List

In an update to my previous post, Environment Minister Rona Ambrose and Health Minister Tony Clement are unveiling proposals to add polybrominated diphenyl ethers and perfluorooctane sulfonate to Canada's list of toxic substances under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act - a move that is one of the most aggressive regulatory actions in the world against these compounds.

Scientific studies are increasingly linking low levels of these toxins to a range of conditions and symptoms including attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders in children, thyroid hormone disruption, decreased sperm counts, and in some cases death.

Designating them as toxic chemicals would give Ottawa the ability to make formal regulations restricting their use.
